Ever heard of SDG washing? The urgency of Sustainable Development Goals Due Diligence

After green washing and blue washing – using a UN logo to signpost sustainability without doing much – the term SDG washing points to businesses that use the Sustainable Development Goals to market their positive contribution to some SDGs while ignoring their negative impact on others. For example, a car company may market their electric cars as saving the climate (SDG 13↑). Yet, the cobalt in their batteries may be mined by…

More on the government's "woefully inadequate" air quality plans

Almost a million more people will have died prematurely along with countless others who will suffer ill-health by the time the Government's key measure in their new air quality plans comes into operation: the ban on all new petrol and diesel by 2040 and a commitment that "almost" every car and van on the road to be a zero emission vehicle by 2050.

Before the end of July, the Government was forced to publish the …

A government you want to wake up to, vote on 8 June

Today People and Planet urge you all to use your vote next Thursday:

Next Friday, 9 June 2017, we will be waking up to a new government. Add your mark on what that government should look like. Vote on Thursday 8 June.

Since Theresa May called for a general election in April, an incredible 1.05 million young people have registered to vote. But, in past elections, this has failed to translate to a cross on the ballot box.

In May 2015, voter turnout…

UK Government releases ‘weak’ air quality plans

The Government have now released their new air quality plans, and local law firm ClientEarth, who forced them to finally deliver the plans, are not impressed. Their website carries the following statement:

Reacting to today’s air quality plans from the UK Government, ClientEarth CEO James Thornton said: “We are continuing to study the government’s …

Hackney law firm 3 : Government 0

Hackney law firm Client Earth won a third court victory over the Govenment which has repeatedly delayed publication of it's Air Quality plans.  The judge agreed with Client Earth that public health concerns overule the convention of purdah which the government tried to use to delay publishing the plans until after the general election.  Now they must be published on 9th May after the local elections.…

Hackney Energy relaunches bid for power!

Hackney Energy is up and running again. Government cuts to community solar schemes knocked us off track for a while. But we are going for an Energy Advice Shop in Hackney and for crowdfunding a solar scheme in the borough – just for starters. The Hackney Energy website, blog and tweets are ticking over, and we always welcome ideas for blogs or news items. But it was good to begin to share ideas for further HE campaigns in 2017.

Actions from…

The rise in three-weekly waste collections

An interesting article by Peter Jones on Isonomia on what's behind the rise in three-weekly collections: the cuts in council budgets and the decisions that have to be made about what's going to give. http://www.isonomia.co.uk/?p=4781

Plans for a new incinerator at Edmonton were given development consent last week

Plans for a new incinerator at Edmonton got development consent from the government last week.  The current incinerator will reach the end of it's useful life in 2025 and it's replacement is now apparently planned with even more capacity to take waste from other parts of London.

Paying for the capital costs of the new plant will put waste disposal costs in…

Late last year the RSPB published their State of Nature 2016 Report. It shows the UK's performance on biodiversity is abysmal.  It shows the Government is simply failing to protect our ecosystems and the species that depend on them.  In fact it is doing worse that 188 of the 218 countries…

Footprint of our mobiles

The Restart Project report that the average mobile made this year will produce 35 kg of carbon emissions in manufacture, equivalent to 16 weeks of laundry.  And with around 1.9 billion mobiles sold a year that's the same as Austria's emissions.  They're asking us to make our phones last longer - even just 1/3 long could save the same as Singapore's annual emissions.  Demand better design and…
