Education for Sustainability comes into focus

Sustainable Hackney has decided on an additional work stream.  We hope to work with interested parties and organisations wanting to support and encourage educational establishments in Hackney to put sustainability at the heart of what they do and towards Hackney schools adopting the Sustainable Schools Framework.

Supporters at our AGM on the 28th June heard contributions from Councillor Jon Burke who holds the newly created Sustainability brief on Hackney Council.  He informed us of his vision of a sustainable borough. Neil Herrington, an academic from the London Centre of Excellence in Education for Sustainability and the University of East London followed, suggesting ways we could question our lifestyles for a more sustainable future. Then Jess Dolan described the projects offered by EcoACTIVE, a local environmental education charity. Finally Jack Spawton-Rice inspired the meeting with activities that take place at St Monica’s primary school where they are even building a greenhouse from 2000 recycled plastic bottles.

At a meeting in July participants suggested and offered definitions and ideas of education and sustainability, which we now hope to build into a coherent strategy.  Soon our aim is to bring these collaborators and the Steering Group members together to explore ways we can promote Education for Sustainability in schools throughout the Borough.
