June 9, 2019 from 3pm to 4:30pm
A wildflower (probably with some bees) exploration of a little known gem of Hackney Marshes - the brownfield ('mosaic habitat') site on East Marsh. Once it was a car park, till HMUG helped persuade LBH to turn it over to nature in 2016. Come and see what nature is up to, 3 years on.Led by botanist Annie Chipchase who helped design the site. Totally free.Meet at the site, north-easternmost corner of East Marsh. Just the thing for your after-Sunday-lunch stroll or cycle. Or you can get a bus 308…See More

Hackney Marshes Western Woods Wander at Hackney Marshes

November 11, 2018 from 2pm to 4pm
Led by Russell MillerSpend a Sunday afternoon among the autumn colour down the west edge of the marsh in the company of an outstanding local guide. A lot of this woodland was planted by HMUG volunteers 15-20 years ago and is now a Site of Interest for Nature Conservation: we'll look at how this young woodland is developing.Older by many decades, magnificent grey & black poplars, the marshes' distinctive tree, now aging (and sometimes collapsing) veterans hosting dramatic hollows and…See More

Resist Lea Valley Park land sell-off

Posted on January 30, 2017 at 14:26 0 Comments

We're very concerned about a threat to sell park land near the north edge of Hackney Marsh to build housing. Please, if you can, get a short email off to Waltham Forest council by the end of Tuesday 31st Jan.

All that's needed:

* address: leabridgeandleytonconsultation@walthamforest.gov.uk

* title: Lea Bridge Eastside Vision Consultation

* Ask the council to remove the…

There is just under a week left for you to comment on proposals for a new building and car park on the north marsh. Please try to get your comments in. The questionnaire is open until 9 July on the council's web site.

HMUG's main concerns are

  • the amount of private parking (resulting in the building going on what is now grass)
  • whether the council will do a decent job on…

It's a fair coppice

We're over half way through our winter sessions in Wick Wood. There's been a good turn out from a bunch of nice people, with all degrees of experience from nil to lots. You can still squeeze into one of the few spare slots this Sunday or Sunday 3rd March if you contact …

Cow Bridge: gate out, Grass Roof Company in

Posted on February 13, 2013 at 11:02 0 Comments

There's progress at Cow Bridge. Last week a new lockable bollard appeared, and yesterday I arrived just at the right moment to see the spectacular uprooting of the gate and post. Apparently they'll be re-installed in another park, so this brand new kit won't be wasted. So, the bridge project is just about finished, and only 14 months…
