Message from 10:10, who bring people together to do positive, practical stuff that helps tackle climate change:

You may well have seen in the news yesterday stories about the government’s decision to close the export tariff for small scale renewables - including solar - from the end of March next year. However, the issue is far from settled.

While the government has confirmed that the export tariff (along with the feed-in tariff) will close, it has also now committed to bringing out ‘specific proposals for future arrangements in due course’.

This means the government now understands that it is not OK to expect solar households, businesses or schools to be forced to give surplus power away for free.

While it may not seem like it, this is progress. It’s now up to us to keep the pressure on into the new year to make sure the new policy they propose is up to scratch, and arrives as soon as possible.

And you can start now by asking a friend or family member to email their MP. We need the government to know we’re not going away!

10:10 will be back in the new year to join you in making sure solar gets the fair deal it is owed.
