Who's the greenest mayoral candidate?

Just seven says to go before we vote on our next mayor!

FOE and Greenpeace have done a great bit of analysis, looking at the the four main candidates’ records and commitments on the environment. They've ranked the candidates on air pollution, aviation, energy and energy efficiency, green spaces, climate change and transport. Perhaps no surprises, but they found that:

  • Jenny Jones, Green Party, is the greenest candidate
  • Labour’s Ken Livingstone is second
  • Brian Paddick of the Lib Dems is third greenest
  • Conservative Boris Johnson comes last

Here’s the full analysis (http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/briefing_notes/london_mayor_ranking_2...). And if you want to find out about hustings and suggested questions for the candidates, read the mini-guide to the election (http://www.foe.co.uk/resource/factsheets/london_elections_info_guid...).

Some more statistics for all you budding psephologists:-

  • 34% of Hackney voters voted for the Green mayoral candidate Jenny Jones; 9% as the first preference and a staggering 25% as the second preference.  Why don't more people vote heart then head?
  • Hackney voters were the greenest in London with 16.3% voting green for the GLA London-wide list and 18.3% for the Constituency member.

That's really interesting - thanks for stats James.

Hard to say whether it constitutes a trend from only one year's data... Though I'd like to think yes! I think that Jenny Jones' success in the mayoral election had at least something to do with the unpopularity of the Lib Dems, but I think she made a really good showing and hopefully her success and her visibility over the next four years will support a trend towards seeing greens as a credible option, not a limited, nice-to-have platform...

Greens increased their share of the vote in Hackney and London in these elections.

  • Hackney Central by-election from 14.1% to 15.2% taking 2nd place.
  • GLA North East (includes Hackney) from 13.3% to 15.5% taking 3rd place.
  • GLA London-wide list from 8.4% to 8.5% taking 3rd place
  • Mayoral vote from 3.2% to 4.5% taking 3rd place.

Is this a trend?
