Event Description

Filmmakers explore in this session what surviving and resisting looks like, in two fiction shorts and two documentary films that portray the claustrophobic nature of domestic abuse, but also the courage of survivors, the process of healing through art and community and the indispensable support of friends and estate workers.

BREAKING THE SILENCE
Julia Lima, Brazil, 2018
One in every three Brazilian women has suffered some type of violence during their lives. Whether physical or psychological, abuse is more common than one would like to believe. But women are speaking up, reporting cases, and building networks of support and female empowerment. This film shows the journeys of three of them, who have decided to share their experiences in order to deal with trauma and produce change, not only in their lives but also in the society that surrounds them.

RESTAURAÇAO
Natalia Keiko, Brazil, 2015
Restoration work as a metaphor for healing. The restorer lovingly mends the portrait of a young girl while telling her story of survival.

I TRIED
Laís Melo, Brazil, 2017
Courage grows to replace the anguish that has long taken hold of her body. One morning, Gloria leaves, ready to take the step.

NAZANIN
Parya Vatankhah, France, 2018
Nazanin’s phone is her only window to the outside. Her friend Parya is on the other end, but how can you help from a different world?
