Event Description

Everyone is invited to take part in the planting of two new trees in De Beauvoir Square on Wednesday 20 January from 10am. Thomas Campbell, Hackney's arboricultural officer, will be leading the planting.

The two trees have been chosen to extend the foraging season for bees in the area and to fit in with the existing trees in and around the square.

- Prunus ‘Tai Haku’ is a medium-sized tree with a lovely white blossom in the spring, which provides important early nectar for bees.

- Styphnolobium japonicum or Japanese pagoda (formerly Sophora japonica) is a larger deciduous tree that has lovely pea-shaped white flowers in August and September, producing nectar and pollen when other sources of food are scarce. Its leaves also have rich autumn colouring.

The trees have been bought by De Beauvoir Gardeners in association with Hackney Council and Alison Benjamin, who has researched trees for bees as co-founder of Urban Bees - see http://www.urbanbees.co.uk/trees/trees.htm

Please come along if you can. Children are welcome. Wear warm clothes and sturdy boots or wellies.

The end time of this event is unclear but it is now thought that, since there are only two trees involved, this may not last more than a couple of hours.

So don't come along too late, if you're interested in watching the planting and meeting those involved, rather than just admiring the new trees in their planting positions.
