Event Description

This autumn the Castle Garden is helping Hubbub with their Pumpkin Rescue campaign.

If you don't have a means of composting at home you can bring your pumpkin lantern to the garden and we will compost it.

"Pumpkin Rescue is a celebration of food; one which calls for cooking and composting of our favourite spooky staple...

On average we waste 18,000 tonnes of edible pumpkins at Halloween, that’s the same as 1,500 double decker buses going to landfill. Halloween might be a time for scares but we find this needless waste a little too scary..." *

In celebration we will be running a free event on 1st November
  • there'll be compost activities and seasonal crafts for children from 1.30pm.
  • Our garden apprentice Edd will be leading a composting and food waste workshop, 2 - 3pm. See how the Castle processes garden plant waste and the huge amount of food scraps, napkins and banana skins from the kitchen, cafe and centre, and turns it in to nutrient-rich soil for the garden's vegetable beds. He can offer advice on setting up your own composting system.
  • Enjoy some free and warming "Liberated vegetable soup" after the workshop
  • with live music, a cappella, to round things up.
No need to book, just sign-in at reception on the day.
