At this meeting we will be discussing with Meg Hillier her stance on the Silvertown Tunnel and the Climate and Ecological Emergency bill. The tunnel has the backing of the Mayor of London but is arousing considerable opposition due to its soaring cost and the deadly impact of greater air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Hackney’s mayor has made his view plain and given it thumbs down. The CEE bill is another issue that divides Labour. It is rallying support by promising to go further than all other current policies in tackling the climate and ecological crisis. The Tory government’s new goals for cutting carbon emissions have grabbed the headlines but left many wondering if pre-COP grandstanding is their only intention. How these goals will be achieved has not been spelt out and their policies, such as airport expansion only worsen the climate crisis.
The Tories promised spend on addressing the climate crisis is pitifully small compared to our neighbour’s, France and Germany, and given all the examples of cronyism already seen, who knows where this spending will go. Meg Hillier, as chair of the Commons’ Public Accounts Committee, is one of the few people with the remit to ask exacting questions. With so many flagrant abuses of public funds detailed scrutiny is more important than ever. For this reason we welcome and look forward hearing from Meg Hillier about her role.
