‘In Your Hands’ is an initiative by Standpoint Studios in Hoxton to pass on professional craft skills to young people, aged 8–14 years-old, in our local community of East London. Following last year’s successful holiday course the project returns during term time with a new topic – bats!
New North Press is a letterpress printing studio where wood and metal type blocks are printed by hand in the traditional way. Class participants will learn about this technique by using the studio to design, print and hand-bind their own booklet on this course’s
subject: The fascinating life of bats.
Research will begin with a field trip to Phytology, a nearby Nature Reserve, where the young people will learn all about these amazing animals from the resident ecologist. We will then help them to develop their observations and ideas about this experience and
communicate them visually using letterpress. Everyone completing the course will leave with high-quality hand-crafted outcomes that they have produced themselves.
Classes will be lead by Beatrice Bless, an experienced and qualified teacher at primary level, and an accomplished letterpress technician, teaching both at New North Press and Camberwell College of Arts.
