That there is a Climate Emergency is now beyond doubt and accepted by all but the most sceptical or by those who profit most from the fossil fuel and other CO2 emitting industries. Hackney Council, as well as the government, have recently declared a climate emergency and the NEU passed a motion on Climate Change at their National Conference. Thus, we all have a responsibility for ensuring that they all urgently process national and local action plans.
Hackney council’s action plan https://news.hackney.gov.uk/hackney-council-pledges-to-reach-net-zero-emissions-by-2040/?medium=email&source=govdelivery .
One glaring omission we noted, as members of the Education for Sustainability (EfS) Network, is any mention of EfS in Hackney Schools or of raising awareness of climate change and its mitigation among pupils, staff and local communities.
The first regular meeting of Hackney National Education Union (NEU)
of the new academic year will focus on Climate Change/Sustainability Education through the Eco Schools programme and its place in Hackney Schools.
The meeting will be held as usual in The Urswick School, E9 starting at 5pm on 23rd September - all NEU (and especially new) members welcome.
