When the renamed Museum of the Home reopens on Saturday, June 12th we have the opportunity to demonstrate that the will of local people is to sever completely its association with slavery. Despite popular support to remove the statue of the slave-trader Sir Robert Geffrye from its niche; the trustees under pressure from Tory culture secretary have chosen to ignore the result of their own referendum and leave it in place. The museum states it 'acknowledges the pain caused by the connections between the museum buildings and the forced labour and trading of enslaved Africans' but refuses to remove the statue. This is disingenuous and unacceptable.
