Free event featuring news from the UK Fossil Free Campaign and 'Do the Math' film screening
The principle of divesting (removing investments) from companies engaged in unethical activities is best known for its role in the anti-apartheid campaign in the 80s, which eventually dislodged the racist regime in South Africa.
However a 21st century divestment campaign is emerging, cited by many as the most important campaign of current times. The new 'Fossil Free' campaign, launched in the US by environmental campaign group 350.org, is a mass scale initiative to get organisations and institutions to divest from stocks held in fossil fuel companies. In the their own words - if it’s wrong to wreck the climate, it’s wrong to profit from that wreckage, and if we can’t financially bankrupt the companies, we can morally bankrupt them.
The Fossil Free campaign has gathered pace in the US where, week on week, more colleges, universities and religious organisations are divesting from fossil fuel as a result of pressure from students and the public. Momentum has spread to the UK where there are ambitious plans afoot to divest the Church of England, the renowned university UCL and several other public and educational institutions.
Join us to hear more about this rising phenomenon at a FREE divestment event at HUB Islington, where we’ll be screening the 45-mins 350.org divestment film ‘Do the Math’ narrated by environmentalist Bill McKibben, and hearing directly from the people leading the dynamic divestment movement in the UK.
