Farm animals suffer in almost unimaginable numbers. Every year alone, nearly a billion animals in the UK are slaughtered for food. Laying hens who produce eggs are slaughtered after a year of production, and around a half of the 36 million hens in the UK are raised in enriched cages. Cages limit behaviour and expression in birds, and do not provide a life worth living for these sensitive, inquisitive animals.

So what can we do to put a stop to this cruelty?

The Humane League is an international farm animal protection organisation working tirelessly to alleviate animal suffering. Founded in the US in 2005, the organisation is now building up a full team of activists here in the UK. Its strategy is to identify how and where animals suffer the most, and apply a laser-like focus on reforming it. Their first major campaigns saw them facing up to huge US companies to ask them to stop using cages for laying hens - with extraordinary success. Bringing their dedication to the UK, The Humane League has worked with over 50 brands in the country to make cage-free commitments to date.

Bolstered by the success of these campaigns, The Humane League is now turning its focus to the plight of chickens reared for meat. These animals are bred to grow so big, so fast, that they can barely walk, and suffer from intense pain and significant health problems. This needs to change, and fast.
