New Spitalfields, a harmful and unsuitable development in a location at risk from flash flooding

Hackney, like every other authority in the UK, is preparing a climate action plan and like every other authority it devises its plan on the basis of its own territorial boundaries. A major problem for plans like these is, of course, that climate knows no borders and trying to ‘fix’ the problem in one part of London without coordinating action with other authorities will undermine the whole project. The Lea Valley Park and the Marshes, East London’s Green Lung, is the most important green open…See More

About me
Save Lea Marshes (SLM) began as the Save Leyton Marsh campaign group, opposing the construction of a temporary basketball training facility for the 2012 Olympic Games.

The group has now broadened its focus and is campaigning to ensure that all the Lower Lea Valley marshes - Tottenham Marsh, Walthamstow Marsh, Leyton Marsh and Hackney Marshes - remain open and green.

Working cooperatively with other local and special-interest groups, we want to preserve the land for nature and open community use. To achieve this we need to ensure that:

Leyton Marsh is fully restored and that the authorities take responsibility for any problems created by the building work in 2012
Hackney East Marsh is reinstated as green open space
The Marshes become a pesticide-free zone and a haven for plants, butterflies, bees and other species in critical decline
The Marshes are free from enclosure and development of any kind
The Marshes continue to be designated as Metropolitan Open Land
Walthamstow Marsh retains its status as an S.S.S.I. (Site of Special Scientific Interest)
