EDF legal threat to local activists - letter of concern

The letter below has been sent to the Hackney Gazette and Hackney Citizen from Hackney & Tower Hamlets Friends of the Earth and Sustainable Hackney, in support of local activists whom EDF Energy are threatening to sue for protesting and occupying chimneys at a power station:

 Dear editor,

As local representatives of environmental organisations and civil society we are writing to express our grave concern at EDFs recent decision to sue Richard George from Finsbury Park and Lawrence Carter and Hannah Davey from Clapton and 18 other brave young environmental campaigners, possibly for as much as £5 million, for climbing chimneys and protesting at a power station. That's enough to bankrupt them, make them lose their homes or burden them with huge debts for years to come.

The right to protest and speak out is a fundamental right we should all be enormously proud and protective of.

We believe that legal threats like EDFs can only work to dampen peoples' willingness to speak out and can diminish the health of our democracy.

We therefore call on EDF to withdraw their legal threat, in the interests of the greater good.

Yours sincerely,

Hackney and Tower Hamlets Friends of the Earth

As people are probably aware by now, EDF have dropped the lawsuit.
