Sustainable Valentine's Ideas

So you want to show your loved one that you appreciate them, but you also care about the planet. Valentine's Day has a significant negative impact on the planet due to the large volume of consumer goods purchased, particularly flowers, chocolate, cards, and gifts, which often require intensive production processes, leading to high carbon emissions, water usage, and waste generation

Here are some ideas to make this Valentine's Day easier on the planet:

  1. Swap freshly cut flowers for locally grown plants from a Hackney garden centre, such as N1

  2. If they're a chocolate fan, make sure you're buying from a Fair Trade brand (Vego is a personal fave)

  3. Instead of panic buying an item they'll only wear once, go for a Beyond Retro Giftcard and let them choose their next perfect date-night outfit

  4. Opt for an experience over a material gift and check out what's on at a local theatre, such as the Arcola or The Yard

  5. Purchase a Sustainable Hackney contribution in their name - just input their name and email at the checkout

As a final suggestion, skip the wrapping paper and shop-bought card altogether and get creative by recycling old tissue paper, fabric or magazines.
