Event Description

Marxism 2019

A festival of socialist ideas

4 - 7 July, London

Capitalism is in crisis. The gulf between rich and poor is widening and for the majority the system offers little besides financial insecurity, fear of recession, war and climate crisis. Marxism Festival 2019 is a forum for meetings and debate on how we can prevent these gross inequalities, diminishing opportunities and beat back the rise of racism, fascism & the far right. It will address a wide range of topics.

The venue for Marxism 2019 is the People's Palace at Queen Mary University, Mile End campus, E1 4NS. The nearest tube is Mile End on the Central Line.

Environmentalists are witnessing capitalism is destroying the planet while those at the top of society are doing nothing except contributing to the destruction. But there are positive signs of resistance; we've seen an explosion of new climate movements from Extinction Rebellion to the school strikes. System change not climate change is a key theme of Marxism 2019 with debates including:

  • Activists from Extinction Rebellion and the school climate strikes debate Climate rebellion: how can we get system change?
  • Asad Rehman from War on Want and Suzanne Jeffery from the Campaign against Climate Change discuss the Green New Deal: how can we get a just transition?
  • Is over population to blame for climate change?
  • Author and editor of Climate & Capitalism Ian Angus explores The discovery and rediscovery of the Metabolic Rift
  • Sarah Ensor, Martin Empson & Ian Angus launch new book System change not climate: a revolutionary response to environmental crisis.
  • Amy Leather asks Is our diet destorying the planet?
  • Camilla Royle discusses Marxism & the Anthropocene
