Event Description

JOIN US IN CALLING FOR HACKEY COUNCIL TO FULLY DIVEST FROM FOSSIL FUELS

On Saturday 22nd May, every Hackney citizen is invited to march with us to demand the end of Hackney council's investments in fossil fuel companies.

The council is reviewing its investments. The time is NOW.

Meet us at 11 am in Hackney Downs Park for a 12pm start.

From there we will march united to the Hackney Town Hall. It will be colorful, theatrical, loud and fun!

This action will be building momentum toward a Hackney People's Assembly on the council's investments, which will be held in July, and to which all citizens of Hackney are invited.

Come along to the action to learn more about this People's Assembly and how to be involved in re-shaping Hackney's future. Click attending on the Facebook event here.

About the action

In 2019, Hackney City Council declared a climate emergency, and promised to pursue it "with the utmost seriousness and urgency".

As of 2021, the council is investing £34 million of Hackney council workers' pension funds in fossil fuel companies like Shell, BP, Rio Tinto and Exxon Mobil.

In addition to fuelling climate and ecological breakdown, many of the companies that receive council money have a sordid record of human rights abuse, violent resource extraction and severe pollution, locally and globally. Shell has been extracting oil reserves under the wetlands of the Niger Delta for decades.

As a result, the Niger Delta is now one of the most polluted places on Earth and it could take up to 30 years to clean up the pollution that Shell and other oil companies have caused, according to the United Nations.

Shell knew in 1991 that continuing to emit CO2 would cause dangerous levels of global heating, and yet has continued to relentlessly expand fossil fuel production.
