Demonstrate for real and effective action on climate change: Saturday 7th March

Come and join us!

Hackney meeting points:

  1. 11.30 am outside CLR James Library, Dalston Square to get the 38 bus to Lincoln’s Inn fields
  2. 12.45 at the North West corner of Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

Tell us about how you are organising to build the demo by adding your comments below.

We had a really good meeting on 12th February with 40-50 people discussing the film and coming up with ideas for getting people out on the demo.  Here's a selection of things you can do:

  • Email everyone you know!  Attach our poster and leaflet.
  • Send an invitation using your calender to everyone you know so they get a reminder.
  • Give your neighbours a copy of the leaflet and talk to them about the demo.  Leaflet your road.  Get those who are on side to talk to the neighbours too.
  • Talk to people at random - at the bus stop, in a queue ...
  • Have a movie night - contact tor@torkristoffersen.com for abridged version of the film.
  • Talk to your local church, mosque, synagogue and ask them to put up information and urge their members to come along.
  • Put up posters in local shops, cafes and schools.
  • Have a stall in the markets and hand out leaflets.
  • Children! Harass your parents!  Raise it with your teachers at school and get the school coming along together.
  • Everybody bring at least 2 or 10 more people.  Tackle your mates really seriously about being there.  This is serious.
  • Remind people again.  They forget!  Use Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Make your own banners and placards so we're really visible on the day.
  • Prepare a set of answers to FAQs and myths that action on climate change is bad for the economy.  We'll have a look at this but in the meantime check out the anti-sceptics website http://www.skepticalscience.com/ .  Common arguments used in denial are in a panel on the left. It also has an app.
  • See if the local radio stations will cover it.
  • Ask Reel News to be there to film us.
  • Wear something yellow if you can.  High Vis vests are ~£2 from DIY shops.
  • Have a competition for the best placard in the schools (we might need to think about this for December's march)
  • Be optimistic!  Be there!  As Nelson Mandela said "History isn't made by kings and queens.  It's made by millions."

02/03/2015  It's climate week.  Here's some stuff that shows what we are up against:

Guardian 21/02/2015 - Energy industry funded climate denier

Guardian 27/02/2015 - In early 1998 representatives from major fossil fuel corporations and industry groups joined forces with operatives from major conservative think tanks and public relations experts to draft what they called their Global Climate Science Communications (GCSC) plan.  In 1998  major fossil fuel companies put $2m behind a plan that would effectively fuel the fires of climate science scepticism among the American public. We reveal where the 12 people behind that plan are now.

From my daughter Lana to Kathryn after joining SH:-

I am more than happy to talk to Rushmore about the demo. I will also investigate about the links, perhaps the headmaster will put them to good use at our school! Thanks for attaching the posters except my Dad already picked up a few from the public meeting held at the library which I will put up around the school if allowed. My Dad has also put a few leaflets inside our Little Free Library. He has also put an A3 poster up on the public notice board on our road near Clapton Girls Academy back exit.

I was also thinking about bringing some yellow face paint to create free sun faces for people on the demo.
