Eco renovation of an older house

During Open House weekend I visited 74 Amhurst Road, which the owner has extensively renovated with the environment in mind.  Wall insulation, loft insulation, solar PV, efficient lighting, double-glazing, boiler heat recovery, water harvesting, and use of recycled materials are among the many features.

With the owner's kind permission here is a guide to the…

Tilting at windmills - invite to new photo exhibition in Dalston

“Just then they came in sight of thirty or forty windmills that rise from that plain. And no sooner did Don Quixote see them than he said to his squire, ‘…I intend to do battle with them and slay them. With their spoils we shall begin to be rich for this is a righteous war...’

‘Take care, sir,’ cried Sancho Panza. ‘Those over there are not giants but windmills. Those things that seem to be their arms are sails which, when they are whirled around by the wind, turn the…

Actions to improve insulation on Hackney Council Estates

Background

Generally Hackney is a typical inner London Borough with limited scope for cavity wall insulation because so many of the homes have pre-1919 solid walls. While working as a paid surveyor on the Mayor of London’s RENEW programme I realised that this was not the case for homes originally built by Hackney Council. There is a band of estates scattered across Hackney built in the late 1970s easily identified by their non-standard bricks which were built with cavities. Most have…

The John Carlos Story

As the 2012 London Olympics loom, this is a good time to remember John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s Black Power salute on the 1968 Olympic podium.  It sparked great controversy.

Their show of defiance remains one of the most iconic images of Olympic history. “A lot of the athletes thought that winning medals would supersede or protect them from racism. But even if you won the medal it ain’t going to save your momma. It ain’t going to save your sister or children,” says Carlos.

The…

Community Street and Estate Planting - after Chelsea Fringe 2012

De Beauvoir Gardeners' group (which is open to all Hackney residents) started this project as part of Chelsea Fringe, which began in 2012 - but we didn't intend it to begin and end with the three weeks for which the Fringe officially ran this year.

Our idea was to use the Fringe project to kick-start a street and estate planting initiative across as…

Did the closures and the Weekend affect you? Please let us know, with a comment here or at…

This fascinating series on BBC has traced the social and planning history of London's streets from Charles Booth's poverty maps to the present day.  Next Wednesday 11th July at 9pm on BBC2 the programme features Arnold Circus, just outside Hackney, but well known in the area.

"The episode features Arnold Circus, in the east end and the story of a Victorian social experiment that changed Britain. Arnold Circus is home to the first council estate which opened in 1896. The planning…
