About me
Growing Communities is a social enterprise based in Hackney, transforming food and farming through community-led trade. We're working out how to feed urban populations in the face of climate change and peak oil. We run an organic fruit and veg box scheme, the Stoke Newington Farmers Market, three Urban Market Gardens and Patchwork Farm, and we are helping other communities transform their food through community-led box schemes with our Start up Programme.

Hi, I'm wondering why there doesn't seem to be any kind of seed swapping event in Hackney, despite all the community and private gardening that goes on here. It seems such an obvious thing to do here that I wonder why it's apparently not happening.

GC ran a combined plant sale and seed swap a few years ago - which I happened to visit, while helping a friend with a new garden to plant - but I can't see any sign that this is a regular event. Are you planning another soon, by any chance?

If not, would you please think about doing this - perhaps as a general plant and seed swapping event, rather than being limited (perhaps) by what GC itself has to spare? I was wondering whether to talk to De Beauvoir Gardeners and Dalston Eastern Curve Garden about doing a combined event, as they've collaborated in the past. A wider consortium of horticultural enterprises would seem worth encouraging.

What do you think?
