Roy writes: John Gummer prepared the legislative base for safeguarding Thames wharfs: this provided that the listed wharfs could not be released for development without Secretary of State approval. The Chancellor, earlier this year, devolved that responsibility to the Mayor of London - yet another of his witless acts. The PLA also seem to have lost the plot, "infrastructure" doesn't effectively cover the significance of working wharfs. Some 3M tonnes of sea dredged aggregates are landed at safeguarded wharfs, every year, and this is supplemented by land excavated aggregates from Colchester, also delivered via the Thames. The principle wharfs, Angerstein and Murphys, in Charlton, have a rail head by which approximately half of the landed aggregates are shipped out. All in all, about 375,000 less lorry journeys per year.
