Tonight is the night we unite in solidarity to help refugees across Europe. By attending our film screening of Calais Children, we take a moment to reflect and pause on the many thousands of life’s effected and remain so this winter. We then begin to ask what went wrong and what can be done to help now. We will here from an inspiring line-up of voices on the topic followed by an open conversation with them on where we can go from here. Lord Alf Dobs is a bit of a legend... Born in Prague 1932 in what was then Czechoslovakia, Dubs was one of 669 Czech-resident, mainly Jewish, children saved by British citizens from the Nazis on the Kindertransport (Dubs's father was Jewish). His father had fled to England the day the Nazis arrived in Czechoslovakia. Dubs was a child refugee of word war 2.
Since then he has ran for election and served this country, from 1983-87 as an elected seat for Battersea. From 1988 to 1995, he was director of the Refugee Council.
The Dubs Amendment:
In 2016, Lord Dubs sponsored an amendment to the ‘Immigration Act 2016’ to offer unaccompanied refugee children safe passage to Britain amidst the European refugee crisis. Originally rejected by the House of Commons, the amendment was accepted by the government following a second vote in favour by the Lords - however in February 2017, the Home Office abandoned the scheme after accepting only 350 of the planned 3,000 child refugees!! Tomorrow we find out what happened next to the child refugees left stranded in Calais at our screening of Calais Children. The UK government has only allowed 20 unaccompanied child refugees in two years since the ‘Home Office’s Vulnrable children’s Resettlement Scheme (VCRS) was agreed in 2016! This scheme was to allow 3000 vulnerable refugee children from conflict zones not 20 into the UK!!! And ‘incredibly low’ numbers of children under the ‘Dubs Amendment’, which allowed unaccompanied child refugees from Europe into the UK.
According to the UN there are approx over 12.4 million refugees under the age of 18 around the world currently seeking refuge.

The refugee crisis is an unresolved problem effecting the most vulnerable. 25 million refugees around the world continue to struggle, nearly half of them are under the age of 18!! Calais Children is a documentary film made by Hackney film maker Sue Clayton, that tells a story of what happened to 2000 lone children based in the Calais Jungle after it was set on fire by the French authority’s in 2016.
